Country Holidays for Inner City Kids (CHICKS) is a registered children’s charity, founded in 1992, which offers free, 6-day residential respite breaks for disadvantaged children from across the UK, who would not otherwise have a holiday that year.
We provide a unique experience of care, understanding and support with outdoor activities, games, team building and crafts.
We are a small, caring organisation with a strong emphasis on family values.
Our centres take a maximum of 16 children at one time; 8 boys and 8 girls, within an 8-11 or 12-15 age range which ensures a friendly and supportive “family” atmosphere.
We aim to operate a 2:1 child/adult ratio, and all staff and contract instructors are fully trained in their respective duties. All activities are “challenge by choice”. No child is ever forced to take part.
During their week long break children receive as much care, attention and support as possible; enjoying a wealth of experiences from pony trekking to rock climbing, as well as the opportunity to make new and often long lasting friendships.
Our support doesn’t end when a child leaves us, we stay in regular contact with letters, Birthday cards, newsletters and Christmas presents; we also organise return visits for as many children as possible. We want children to return home knowing that someone cares, someone understands, someone thinks their life is worth living and someone is there – ‘holding their hand’ as a trusted friend.
At CHICKS children can be children.
