Ben*, aged 10, is a young carer for his father who suffers from dementia. Up until 6 months ago he was doing this alone, a huge responsibility for any child. Ben’s mother is now living in the family home and, whilst this has relieved Ben of some of his caring responsibilities, his father can still experience mood swings as a result of his condition which can have an impact on the atmosphere at home. Ben’s mother and father also often argue in front of Ben and he worries about leaving them alone together. Ben’s family live on very little income and there is no spare money for trips or activities; he was referred to CHICKS by his support worker who said “This break would be a great opportunity for Ben to be a 10 year old for a week and have some fun.”
Ben arrived at CHICKS determined to make the most of his time on break. He was described by the Respite Break Leaders as a “kind and helpful young man” and this soon led to him becoming a popular member of the group; on a number of occasions Ben received ‘Star of the Day’ awards from the other children which he was visibly proud about. As well as making lots of positive friendships on break, Ben also really enjoyed all of the exciting activities on offer. His favourite activity was a day spent at ‘Water World’ where Ben and his new friends spent the afternoon whizzing down the water-slides and splashing each other in the wave pool! On his last day Ben rated CHICKS “10/10 because it was a great time #awesome!”
