Making Memories… Giving Hope

It's a Wrap!

Each year as December approaches, CHICKS runs a unique and meaningful operation to ensure every child who has attended a Respite Break that year receives a Christmas present from us. Some of the children who receive these presents may not receive many presents at Christmas time, some may not receive any at all.

Here at CHICKS, we want every child we support to have something to open on Christmas day, to experience the joy of trying to guess what their present might be, and rip off the wrapping paper in anticipation! Whatever the child’s home circumstances around Christmas time, we hope that receiving presents from us will bring back fond memories of the child’s time at CHICKS, and bring a smile to their face as they open their gifts.

We also send each child a Christmas card in the post. The lovely and unique thing about the Christmas cards, is that each is signed by the very volunteers and Respite Break Leaders that were on the child’s specific Respite Break. This means that each child, no matter when they attended that year, will receive a personalised Merry Christmas from the adults that supported them on their Break.

Gemma Smith, CHICKS Respite Break Co-ordinator explains more about the logistics of sending Christmas presents to all the children who came on CHICKS breaks this year: "This year, we have sent out over 700 parcels, each containing 3 gifts. Volunteers from across the country have joined forces as part of the Great CHICKS Present Wrap, and together have wrapped over 2000 gifts! This year’s presents were a mixture of fun presents, as well as gifts that the children may find useful in their daily lives. However, these are remaining top secret for now… we don’t want to spoil the surprise!"

We would like to extend a HUGE thanks to the many volunteers and supporters who wrapped and packed this year's persents, including PepsiCo, Hermes, National Express, Vanguard and Stewarts. Particular thanks also go to Hermes for delivering all of the presents for us.

A spokesperson from Hermes said: "Last year we made sure 100% of deliveries for CHICKS were completed before Christmas Eve – and it is our top priority to repeat that feat – even if it means sharing that chimney with Father Christmas himself.”

From all of us at CHICKS, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
