Christmas wishes will come true this year
Most children in the UK couldn’t imagine a Christmas that wasn’t spent with their family…Read more
As one of our longest-running local events, the CHICKS Cornish Coast Path Walk has attracted many families and friends who want to take on the challenge together and raise money for children and young people living in difficult circumstances.
This year, CHICKS Regional Fundraiser and Cornish Coast Path Walk organiser Mick Ryan welcomed three generations of one family to the October walk! The unique challenge was led by Lisa Mackenzie, who had previously completed the walk with her daughter. This time, she walked the coast alongside her father and son.
Here is her story:
My daughter Meg used to work in the village shop near the CHICKS Coastal Retreat in Cornwall. She'd heard about the Coast Path Walk that was due to take place in May 2018 and signed us up for it. We really enjoyed it, and when Mick mentioned that there'd be another walk planned for October 2019, we jumped at the chance to complete it again!
Unfortunately, Meg was unable to attend this time as she's at university in Winchester and couldn't fit it in, so I asked my 16-year-old son Kai, who is always up for a challenge! We put a shout out on Facebook to family and friends and my dad said he'd like to join us, too. I had to double check with him a few times to make sure he was serious, as he'd had a hip operation in May, but he was determined to do it!
We are all lucky as a family to be close, happy and healthy. We like to give back to society, which is one of the main reasons we decided to take part.
The walk was especially difficult this year compared to last year, as the weather had been pretty wet leading up to the weekend, and although it was better than expected on the day, it was very hard underfoot. There was thick, slippery mud going up and down every hill. Walking poles were a must, and everyone encouraged one another to keep going!
It was a brilliant weekend in which lots of new friends were made. We were well looked after by Mick and Dave. We will definitely be back next year!
CHICKS retreats aren't just a holiday – the week away can be life-changing for the child and the volunteers. Places like this need to exist – they give hope and enjoyment to children that have worries and responsibilities way beyond their years. I hope the money raised brings joy and memories that last much longer than a week.
There is still time to help the Cornish Coast Path Walk team reach their £4,000 target! Click here to donate now and enable more children and young people in the UK living in difficult circumstances to attend a CHICKS respite break. The Coast Path Walk will be back for its ninth year in May 2020, so keep an eye on our website or email firstname.lastname@example.org to register your interest today!
