Making Memories… Giving Hope

A Special Christmas at CHICKS

Share

We hosted our extra special Christmas breaks at our Moorland and Coastal retreats from 23 – 27 December. One of the children who came to CHICKS this Christmas was 8-year-old Daniel*. Daniel’s family live in poverty and were made homeless last year, so he lives with his mum and grandma in temporary accommodation. His mum gave birth just before Christmas, which meant there was even less money to go around.

The hostel where the family is living would not allow them to put up any Christmas decorations, and the limited cooking facilities meant it would have been impossible to make a big Christmas dinner.

Daniel’s family knew that at CHICKS he would be able to enjoy a fun filled Christmas, with lots of festive activities. He was described by the break leaders as a “lovely young man”. Although initially Daniel was very shy and nervous, he quickly made friends and absolutely loved receiving praise and attention from the adults.

During the break at our Moorland retreat, Daniel had the chance to take part in lots of activities, which he really enjoyed. The group went rock climbing, walked up to Brentor church to sing carols, tried out tobogganing and went to the Pantomime! However, sometimes it’s the simple things that really make the break special and Daniel especially loved taking part in arts and crafts and jumping on the trampolines back at the retreat.

Thanks to our supporters we were able to give Daniel – and 24 other children – an extra special Christmas this year.
