We'd like to say a huge thank you to West Cornwall Youth Trust (WCYT), who have chosen to support CHICKS for the second year running.
The trust aims to support disadvantaged young people living in West Cornwall, enabling them to try activities which they might not otherwise be able to afford to take part in.
In 2015, the WCYT gave CHICKS £1000, which went towards providing four children with a break. One of these children was Oscar*:
10-year-old Oscar from Penzance has had a very difficult childhood. There was never enough good quality food available in the home and as a toddler all of Oscar’s teeth rotted away. This led to him becoming extremely self-conscious and he was unable to smile in front of others. There is still a lack a good quality food available at home and this, coupled with a lack of routine, often results in him being too tired to concentrate in school.
Oscar's family are surviving on a very low income. His mother’s job requires her to work unsociable hours and with no support network, and no money available for childcare, Oscar regularly accompanies his mother to work at 5am.
Oscar arrived at CHICKS determined to make the most of his break and approached everything with huge enthusiasm. He fully participated in all of the activities on offer, and particularly enjoyed the day-trips to the swimming pool and Trethorne Adventure Park. His natural zest for life meant that he was a popular member of the group and by the end of the week he had made lots of new friends. Oscar had a very caring side to his personality and he made a conscious effort to interact with the younger members of the group, initiatin games that they could participate in. At the end of his time at CHICKS Oscar couldn’t choose just one best memory, instead saying “everything!” was his favourite!
This year, the WCYT has generously donated £2500 to CHICKS, which will go towards providing 10 children from the West Cornwall area with the break away they need! Find out more about the WCYT on their website.
