We are delighted to share some amazing news with you! 15-year-old young carer and CHICKS child Jessie Wyatt won the ‘Young Carer’ award at the London Children of Courage Awards 2016, run by the St James’ Place Foundation.
Jessie was referred to CHICKS by Carers Support Merton, and came on break at our Coastal retreat in August last year, where he had an amazing time. Jessie’s dad was in the army, and now suffers with a back injury and PTSD. This makes him very tired, and Jessie has to help around the house a lot. He will often do the cooking and cleaning, and looks after his younger brother. CHICKS was able to give Jessie a week’s respite from his caring role, and his dad was thrilled that he had the chance to relax and simply be a teenager for the week.
This Award celebrates Jessie’s positive attitude, his determination and his dedication to his family. It also recognises the work that all young carers do, highlighting the huge role they take on in society.
