Elizabeth England is a barrister at 42 Bedford Row, who have been supporting CHICKS since 2016. This Sunday, Elizabeth will be taking on the London Marathon and so far has raised over £1750 for us!
In her own words, here's why she is taking on the challenge:
"After a very successful year of fundraising in 2016 for CHICKS with a pub quiz, cake bake competition, biscuit tasting, and a sponsored run through Regents Park I was delighted to meet with the CHICKS fundraising team in November. We were discussing events for 2017, when it was suggested that CHICKS was looking for a team of runners who could enter the Virgin London Marathon. All eyes fixed on me. Now, I love climbing, I spend a week in hiking in the Alps every summer, and I enter two or three OCR races a year. The last one, in May 2016, the Original Mountain Marathon Lite, had left me with a partially torn tendon in my right quad and a dodgy hip flexor. I had enjoyed a summer off sport. In a fit of pique I said yes. Absolutely. How hard could it be?
Well. It's quite hard. The first training before Christmas took an immediate toll and on a 7 mile training run my right leg gave way underneath me. By the Christmas break I'd had 4 physio sessions and was told I could build up to walking for one mile. I started January 2017 with a 1 mile jog. By the end of February I had built up to a respectable 14 miles. The injury was still pulling but, strangely enough, the more I exercised the less it hurt. What I didn't notice was that, as I was getting physically stronger, my body was repairing itself.
The journey to marathon fitness for me has been motivated by the stories and testimonies of those children who benefit so greatly from the work of CHICKS. They will certainly motivate me as I dig deep to complete the final few miles to the finish line. I am delighted to support this charity and encourage you to challenge yourself. You will personally take something away from every experience (we still talk about the lavender and gin cake my colleague made in the summer last year), but more importantly, you will be inspired by the energy and commitment of CHICKS and the children who benefit from its tireless work."
You can sponsor Elizabeth here, and make sure to cheer her on if you're watching the run on Sunday. Good luck!
